About Esmay

Hello,

I am an artist and musician from London, UK. I create hand painted watercolour illustrations designed as thoughtful gifts and pieces for the home. With character appealing to adults and children alike, they are available on high quality products that can be treasured for years to come. My designs are available as originals and fine art prints or on fine bone china mugs and greetings cards. I also offer professional mounting and framing of prints and originals - for more info see here.

I have always loved giving and receiving thoughtful gifts as well as filling my home with pieces that really resonate with me. This inspired me to make a selection of my prints customisable with names and date. I also take on bespoke commissions that range from pet portraits and house portraits to nursery artwork as well as work with businesses on projects including designs for product packaging, fabrics and stationary. If you have a commission in mind, please get in touch at esmayluckart@gmail.com

I have been drawing and painting since I was 2 years old and was often seen around the house covered in paint, happily making paintings and cards for friends and family as gifts at every opportunity. Mother's Day, Birthdays, Christmas.... Passed your driving test? You got something! Making art for them was my way of showing love and appreciation. At an early age I was writing 'Esmay's Workshop' on the back too (thanks Mum for keeping them all), expressing a dream I would revisit later on.

I studied art until 18 at school and a degree in History of Art at Oxford University. I went on to pursue my passion for music forming a band with my brother. It was then that I started illustrating with pen, ink and watercolour when I wanted to make the artwork for my band's music (The Luck) whilst touring in California. I fell in love with the medium and started experimenting more with watercolour illustration, looking at the works of Quentin Blake and E.H. Shepard. Inspired by nature, I found particular focus in bringing out the distinctive personalities and often human-like characteristics of animals. These made for really thoughtful gifts for my friends and family, starting with animals I knew they loved (giraffes, penguins and turtles featured highly!). I soon started putting together collections and taking on commissions, launching my online shop in April 2020!

Making a little piece of happiness that could bring a smile to someone's face is at the heart of what I do. I refine my sketches before painting until 'the moment' happens - the moment that makes me go 'ahhhh' and I can feel the corners of my mouth curl into a smile. So I hope you can feel that when you look at the final pieces! And that you enjoy them whether you are buying for your own living space, a children's room, kitchen or as a gift for someone else.

Quality is very important to me. All my prints are high quality Fine Art 'Giclee' prints, printed on archival papers with pigment based dyes. This ensures a great quality reproduction that can last for years to come. If desired, prints are professionally mounted and framed and come with fixings suitable to hang on a wall. My framers use Clarity+ acrylic (instead of glass glazing) which protects the print from UV rays and avoids fading. To clean, use an anti static cloth. Frames come in 3 high quality mouldings; oak, black grain and white grain, all 22mm thick.
